It was later used by the Moors and then by the Christians during the Reconquista. The town lies in the foothills of the Serra de les Creus mountain range. The surrounding area is mountainous and offers many hiking and nature opportunities. The region has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers. Castalla has a vibrant culture with various traditional festivals. Particularly well-known are the celebrations in honor of Saint Roch (Fiestas de San Roque) and the 'Moros y Cristianos' (Moors and Christians), which reenact the historical conflict between Muslims and Christians. The nearest beaches are just about a 30-minute drive away.
