If one was to identify the most graceful animal to ever take four legs and use them to run like the wind across the open plain, then we have to be talking Equus Caballus, or horse to you and me. El Huerto de Los Jinetes translates into English as ‘The Horseman’s Garden’ and it eloquently al-ludes to the fact that this whole building project was conceived with the idea of providing this wonderful animal with a home. (there are five full sta-bles) providing it with exercise and training (there is an enclosed horse ring) and providing it with comfort and a life of challenge, security and companionship. First lets us state there are 541m2 of built structure, of which 228m2 is for the humans and the rest is dedicated to you-know-who. The main house has 129m2 of internal space and as it is converted from an old masia, the the walls are thick and solid with old wooden beams supporting the roof. There is a bright and very large conservatory of 20m2 just beside the old stone barbecue made when men knew how to create a back-draft in the chimney flue so the smoke goes up and not out into the face of the sweat-ing ‘barbecuer’. Moving from the conservatory into the main house, old beams stretch over a living area in front of a modern convection wood burner/fire, a dining area with an inbuilt, Swiss style bench-seat and then a second chamber just off this main living area, quite substantial in size as it provides 24m2 of internal space. Leading off this living area, there is an independent kitchen that has a separate entrance, but perhaps it is a tad too long and could do with part of it being converted into a very generous pantry. Upstairs there is a cast-iron balustrade that leads to two good sized bedrooms and a spacious bathroom. It is true to say the main house could do with some modernization. The annex or guest quarters is completely separate from the main house with separate stairwell leading to the entrance. It has 75m2 of largely open plan space featuring an ad-hoc kitchen, living area, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The space is interest-ing with many possibilities but would certainly require a complete make-over. What is rather delicious and strictly reserved for the bi-peds, equine friends not allowed, is a beautifully done pool, enclosed in a courtyard with a pergola at the far end and amazing views of the delta. The remaining 313m2 is dedicated to Equus Caballus which by now we all know means horse. There are five stables, a huge barn, a horse-ring, cor-rals and many sliding metal gates that are all top quality. But it must be added here that the complex does need a general freshening up. In terms of more practical matters, water is provided by a series of cister-nas that have a capacity of some 40,000 liters, some that gather water di-rectly from the rainfall. The solar system is adequate but needs upgrading. There is a relatively new diesel 12 horsepower back-up generator and lots of old walls with stories to tell and obstinate archways and sunshine and all of that good stuff. One last thing on a completely different note. The asking price is €350,000, which, for a property of this size and potential, is most attractive. And while the essence of the house is very much horse-orientated, it could be easily adapted to a million different purposes. It is located just 6kms from L’Ampolla, a village famous for its beaches and a gourmet destina-tion. The access is on an asphalt road, and while the last kilometer has detiorated badly there is a neighbourhood plan to resurface it. So don’t hesitate to visit equine heaven, made with love and not in China.
