Location Carchuna is southeast of the urban center of Motril and Torrenueva Costa, in the area known as Los Llanos de Carchuna. It limits to the south with the Mediterranean Sea, to the north with the Sierra del Conjuro, to the west with Cape Sacratif and to the east with Calahonda, up to the Farillo de Carchuna as a limit. This population has its origin with the settlement in Los Llanos, where small farmers formed the population nucleus around the agricultural warehouse built by Florentino Vázquez and his wife Marina Cortés de la Torre in 1953, together with their nephew, the local businessman Fulgencio Spá. Its first inhabitants came from various towns in the Alpujarra such as Torvizcón or Rubite. The final takeoff came with the construction of a new town by the National Colonization Institute, based on a 1965 project signed by Víctor López Morales.1In 1974, a so-called 'colonization' town was completed by the National Institute of Agrarian Reform and Development (IRYDA). This was located right next to the old center 'the village', built with limited means by the farmers themselves who settled on the plain, with which the influx of population grew dramatically. Immigration has also made this town grow in recent years, to the point of its population exceeding 2,000 people. From the beginning Carchuna was a population center dependent on Motril. On November 29, 1996, in a plenary agreement of the Motril City Council, it was unanimously agreed to initiate the procedure with a Local Autonomous Entity that grouped Carchuna and Calahonda due to their close relationship. It was not until March 18, 2005 that the creation of the Autonomous Local Entity of Carchuna-Calahonda was published in the Official Gazette of the Junta de Andalucía.
